Spotlight On: Nephaniel, Rapper

Ahead of Nephaniel's "Vibes" EP release, the Southside rapper designs a playlist of everything he's listening to.

For Nephaniel, music has always been a big part of his life. Growing up in the south suburbs, his hobbies involved writing bars and lines that he'd practice with friends and family. Now living in Bronzeville, he's turning his passion into a career by getting ready to drop his solo EP next month.

Showing vulnerability is something Nephaniel, also known as NePh, has never shied away from. That's exactly what makes his music feel raw and relatable. He raps on everything from money struggles to relationships and being under-appreciated as an artist in a saturated market. But while his music delves into everyday uncertainties, he uses those hardships to fuel his drive to create music.

"As much as I may stress about these things, I have to be the bigger man and wake up day by day to push myself since no one else going to do it," he says.

Catch NePh's EP "Vibes" in early May on all streaming platforms, including Soundcloud and YouTube. In addition to his solo music, he's also one half of the rap duo $UIT alongside fellow rapper Nigel. Listen to their song "The Future Looks Gray" here

Favorite Chicago artist?

Lucki at the moment,  definitely most listened to from the new generation. Of all time, it'll always be Kanye for me though.

Favorite place in Chicago?

Logan Square for nights. Italian Fiesta for Pizza. Eat N Run for chicken, and Harold’s of course.

"Spotlight On" is a weekly series highlighting Chicago creatives with a twist. We share a slice of their stories and what they love, hoping to inspire and connect.
